The Archaeological Museum of Rhodes, located in the Old Town, has a rich archaeological collection with many exhibits from the period of Greek, Roman and Byzantine rule. The museum was opened in 1986 and is housed in the building of the old equestrian hospital built by Fluvianos, a Grand Grand Master of the Order of the Knights, and completed by de Lastique in 1440, as was previously reported on this website.

 

Archaeological Findings of Rhodes


The archaeological museum has a rich collection of archaeological finds from various archaeological periods in Rhodes. Ancient artifacts are found in the region of archaeological excavations on the island, as well as in the museum of Rhodes town, and include vases, jewellery, coins and marble statues (including copies) which date back to the Hellenistic period up to Roman times.

This archaeological site on the island of Rhodes was first excavated by Italians in 1898. The Italian archaeologists found a settlement which was later dated to the late Bronze Age . The settlement had originally been occupied from around 1200 BC.

  • Burial finds (vases, figurines, jewelry, metal artifacts) from the cemeteries of Ialyssos and Kamiros. Geometric to Classical periods (9th - 4th centuries BC).
  • A collection of Classical, Hellenistic and Roman sculpture.
  • Mosaic floors of the Hellenistic and Early Christian period.
  • Funerary slabs from the Knights' period (1309-1522).
  • A collection of Classical, Hellenistic and Roman sculpture.
  • Pyxis of the Fikellura type (550-530 BC.), one of the most distinct groups of the archaic eastern Greek and Ionian ware.
  • Two archaic kouroi from Kamiros (550-530 BC.)

You'll see Kylix pottery with bold designs, Laconian Hydria depicting an epic fight between two different heroes depicted on this ceramic vessel, Grave steles honoring deceased loved ones with powerful messages on them that speak to who they were as people, Stele of Kalliarista - The marble headstone offers a realistic depiction of Helios riding his quadriga accompanied by Selene and her horses (notice these figures are wearing artistically molded foreparts) at dusk.
