June 19, 2023The Medieval Town of Rhodes now has constructed routes that are accessible and friendly for people with disabilities. Additionally, the project will continue in other areas of the town.
The first part of the project, entitled: "Creation of a network for disabled people in the Medieval Town of Rhodes", which concerned Hippodamus Street.
The project, which began in November 2022, was finished before the summer season in early March 2023, and was completed on schedule. The contract of the project entitled: "Creation of a network for the disabled in the Medieval City of Rhodes", was signed by the Mayor of Rhodes.
The project involved building a slab corridor in the middle of the road using the Lardos method, while also preserving the traditional gravel pavement on the sides of the road. Additionally, three (3) double marble wells were constructed following the design of the historic Knights' Street. With the completion of the road, it will accommodate people with disabilities, strollers with babies, cyclists, travelers with luggage, etc.
According to the approved study from the Directorate of Medieval Town and Monuments, there is a project scheduled to continue in November 2023. The project aims to create and restore a traffic network to accommodate disabled individuals, with minor interventions at the entrance gates of the Medieval Town and in areas such as Symi, Argyrokastro, Alexander the Great and Museum squares, as well as Lachitos, Apollonia, Pythagoras, and other streets.
The project involves removing existing pavements, separating and storing pebbles for partial reuse, excavating by machine or hand in areas that may damage the slopes around the pavements, constructing new foundations for the marble, slabs and pebble pavements, and finally placing the adjacent pavements onto the new marble slab pavement.
With this project alongside the Free Parking and transfer to Old Town, Rhodes complete a series of projects that upgrade the Old Town as a destination accessible to everyone either to disabled, either to non disabled people who want to visit Old Town at the peak of its glory!
